Questions to ask on a college tour: a college visit checklist

Visiting a college is your chance to find out what life there is really like.

A campus visit can help you picture yourself at a college and decide whether it feels like the right fit. The right questions can help you learn about academics, student life, costs and opportunities beyond the classroom.

Current students can offer a firsthand perspective on their experiences, while admissions staff can answer questions about applications, scholarships and next steps.

Use this list of questions to prepare for your next college tour. You don't have to ask every question. Choose the ones that matter most to you and leave time to explore.

What questions should I ask on a college tour?

Not sure where to start? KU student ambassador Amaris shares five questions to ask on a college tour, including one that can reveal things you might not learn from a university website.

Use the questions below to explore specific areas of college life and prepare for conversations with current students and admissions staff.

Questions to ask about academics

A campus visit is an opportunity to learn more about the academic experience and the support available to help you succeed. Ask questions about your intended major if you have one, but don't worry if you're still exploring as an undecided major.

Consider asking:

  • How easy is it to connect with professors outside of class?
  • What academic support services are available?
  • How do students choose or change their majors?
  • Can students explore different subjects before deciding on a major?
  • How do undergraduates get involved in research?
  • What opportunities are available for hands-on learning?
  • How accessible are academic advisors?

Tip: If your tour includes an academic building or department, ask whether you can see a classroom, lab or other space where students in your area of interest spend time. You can also ask about opportunities to speak with a professor or current student in that program.

Questions to ask about campus life

Academics are an important part of college, but you'll also spend time making friends, exploring interests and figuring out where you feel at home. Use your campus visit to learn what students do when they're not in class.

Questions to ask include:

  • What do students usually do on weekends?
  • How do students find clubs and organizations to join?
  • What kinds of events happen on campus?
  • Where do students usually study or hang out?
  • How do students meet people outside their classes?
  • What are the residence halls like?
  • What dining options are available?
  • What transportation options are available on and around campus?
  • What is there to do in the surrounding community?
  • What do you like most about living here?

Tip: Pay attention to the spaces where students gather, not just the buildings on your tour route. If you have time, explore the student union, library, dining areas and other common spaces. Visit at a time when you can get a feel for everyday campus activity.

Questions to ask about career preparation

College can help you build skills, gain experience and prepare for what comes after graduation. Ask how the university supports students as they explore career options and gain experience in their fields.

Here are some questions to ask:

  • How do students find internships?
  • What career resources are available to undergraduates?
  • How early can students work with the campus career center?
  • Are there opportunities to connect with employers?
  • How do students gain hands-on experience in their fields?
  • What resources are available for building a resume and preparing for interviews?
  • Can students connect with alumni working in their areas of interest?
  • Are there opportunities to explore careers before choosing a major?

Tip: Ask for examples of how students in your intended major gain experience outside the classroom. You can also ask about career fairs, networking events and other opportunities to connect with employers.

Questions to ask college admissions

Admissions staff can help you understand the application process, college costs and what to do if you're interested in applying.

Consider asking:

  • What are the application deadlines and requirements?
  • What scholarships and financial aid options are available?
  • How can I estimate the total cost of attending, including housing and other expenses?
  • When should I expect an admissions decision?
  • What should I do next if I'm interested in applying?

Tip: Your student ambassador tour guide may not be able to answer every admissions question. If you need help with applications, scholarships or financial aid, ask how to connect with the appropriate office.

Before your visit

  • Review the college's academic programs and majors.
  • Make a list of questions about academics, campus life and costs.
  • Check whether you can visit your intended academic department.
  • Look into any additional information sessions or activities you want to attend.
  • Bring a notebook or use your phone to record notes.

During your visit

  • Ask your tour guide and other current students about their experiences.
  • Learn about academic support, advising and research opportunities.
  • Ask about clubs, campus events and weekend activities.
  • Explore common areas, dining spaces and study spots.
  • Take notes on what you like and what you want to learn more about.
  • Ask admissions staff about application deadlines, scholarships and next steps.

After your visit

  • Write down your first impressions while they're fresh.

  • Compare the college with other schools you're considering.
  • Follow up with admissions or academic departments as needed.

What should I look for during a college visit?

Along with asking questions, pay attention to how the campus feels and how students use the spaces around you. Imagine what your day might look like between classes, where you would spend your time and how you might get involved.

As you explore, consider:

  • The campus environment: Do you feel comfortable exploring the campus? Are there spaces where you could see yourself spending time?
  • The academic experience: Can you picture yourself in the classrooms, labs or other learning spaces? Are there opportunities that interest you?
  • Student life: Do the activities, organizations and common spaces match your interests?
  • Support and resources: Can you find information about academic support, advising, career preparation and other student services?
  • The surrounding community: What would it be like to live, work and spend time outside the classroom?

You don't have to make a final decision during your visit. Instead, use what you see and learn to decide whether the college feels like a good fit for you.
