College prep curriculum

The University of Kansas uses the following course curriculum as a standard when we review applications for undergraduate admission. Students attending a Kansas high school must take courses approved by the Board of Regents to complete this curriculum; all out-of-state students and Kansas residents attending a non-accredited or home-school must take equivalent courses.

KU Course Curriculum

One unit taken each year of high school. One half unit may be speech.

Complete three units during high school from the following, one of which must be chemistry or physics:

  • Biology
  • Advanced biology (second-year biology)
  • Earth/space science
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Principles of technology
  • Physical science

Meet one of these two sets of criteria:

  1. Complete three units during high school from the following and meet the ACT/SAT college readiness math benchmark (22+ ACT/550+ SAT on math section)
    • Algebra I
    • Geometry
    • Algebra II
    • Any course with Algebra II as a prerequisite
  2. Or complete four units, with one unit taken in the graduating year. One of the four units may be any math course prescribed by the school district and must be designed to prepare students for college. The remaining three units must be selected from the following:
    • Algebra I
    • Geometry
    • Algebra II
    • Any course with Algebra II as a prerequisite

Complete three units during high school from the following (coursework must include instruction in U.S. history, U.S. government, and geography):

  • Psychology
  • Economics
  • U.S. government (additional course)
  • U.S. history (additional course)
  • Current social issues
  • Sociology
  • Anthropology
  • Race and ethnic group relations

Complete three units during high school from the following:

  • English
  • Math
  • Natural science
  • Social science
  • Fine arts
  • Computer/information systems
  • Foreign languages
  • Personal finance
  • Speech, debate, forensics
  • Journalism
  • Career and technical education
