You can feel that you're a part of the fabric of the community, but it's also large enough that there's always something to do. There's always something more to learn, to experience, to explore, so I think it's a really great place to be.”

“I love walking past Wescoe Beach. It feels so ‘college,’” said Joshua Alston, Film & Media major, Class of 2028. “Especially between noon and two on a weekday, it’s the perfect time of day to see so many different faces and organizations sharing their missions. It reminds me that no two people are having the same experience here, and that’s what makes KU so special.”

According to class of 2026 marketing major Sarah Forey, Jefferson’s is a standout spot on Mass, serving up classic wings, burgers and daily specials. “Since freshman year, Jefferson's has been a staple in my friend group. We always go there. They have such good deals, and it’s so good.” 

Don’t forget dessert! When it comes to ice cream, KU students have a unanimous favorite. Sylas and Maddy’s is a quick walk from campus, and a tradition that can’t be missed. 

Alice Mungamuri shared that it’s a big part of her memories from her freshman year. “Sylas and Maddy's down on Mass is one of my favorites. I lived at Corbin my freshman year, so it was right down the street. There were always people there and it was just special.”

Live Music and Downtown Lawrence

Downtown Lawrence, especially Mass Street, is where the town’s creativity comes to life. Long known for its live music scene, Lawrence shines when it comes to music and the arts. 

• The Granada: A Mass Street go-to for concerts and student nights out.
• Leid Center: A campus venue featuring musicals, ballets and orchestra events.
• Liberty Hall: This historic venue is more than movies! It hosts open mic nights, concerts, themed events and even Final Four watch parties for KU basketball.
• The Bottleneck: A Lawrence institution since 1985, known for all-ages shows and a big dance floor.
• Music Festivals: From a busker fest to bluegrass and Americana, there are festivals of every flavor in Lawrence. 

“On Mass Street, especially in live music venues like the Granada, performers are usually under the radar, and it’s an awesome, intimate environment,” says class of 2028 information systems and business analytics major Oscar Sanchez-Christensen.

“I'm a big nature person, and I like hiking, so I'll go to Clinton Lake. I’ll also go to Wells Overlook sometimes if I just want to get off campus and be outside,” shared class of 2028 chemical engineering major Celeste Ruisinger. “Baker Wetlands is awesome, too. Those are my top three spots as someone who really likes being outside.”

According to class of 2026 accounting major Audrey Inman, the town is just special. “I love how the university and the community go hand in hand. You can walk into any store or restaurant and see KU logos and Jayhawk fans everywhere. It doesn’t feel like students are intruding on the town. It feels like one big community, and it’s beautiful here! I love everything about Lawrence.”
