Before being admitted to the University of Kansas School of Nursing, Emily Smith spent five weeks in Portugal as a pre-health major through the Atlantis Hospital Shadowing Program. Now a KU nursing student, she looks back on the experience as a defining step in her journey toward a healthcare career.

From observing patient care in Portuguese hospitals to navigating life abroad, her experience highlights how nursing study abroad opportunities can build cultural competence, professional confidence, and a broader understanding of global healthcare.

This Jayhawk POV story was shared by Emily in her own words as part of an ongoing series showcasing real University of Kansas student experiences on campus and around the world. To see more of her experience, check out this TikTok

Choosing a hospital shadowing program in Portugal

This past summer, I had the opportunity to do something that pushed me far outside my comfort zone while also confirming my passion for healthcare. I studied abroad in Portugal through the Atlantis Hospital Shadowing Program with the University of Kansas.

As a nursing student at KU, I have always been eager to gain hands-on experience and a broader perspective on healthcare, which isn’t always available as a pre-nursing major. This program gave me both, plus memories and personal growth I will carry with me forever.

Why I chose to study abroad through KU

When I came to KU, I knew I wanted an education that extended beyond the classroom. I didn’t just want to learn from textbooks; I wanted real-world experiences that would shape me as a future nurse and as a person.

When I learned about KU’s study abroad opportunities and the Atlantis program specifically, I was immediately drawn to the idea of shadowing physicians in another country while fully immersing myself in a new culture.

As someone interested in healthcare, the chance to observe how medicine is practiced internationally felt invaluable. Portugal stood out to me because of its unique healthcare system, rich history, and vibrant culture.

I knew this experience would challenge me academically and personally, and KU made the process feel accessible and well-supported every step of the way.

Inside the hospital: What shadowing abroad looks like

The Atlantis program allowed me to shadow physicians in Portuguese hospitals, giving me firsthand exposure to patient care in a global setting. Watching doctors interact with patients, collaborate with healthcare teams, and navigate a different healthcare system was incredibly eye-opening.

Even though there were differences in language and structure, I quickly realized how universal compassion, teamwork, and patient-centered care truly are.

One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was observing how healthcare providers communicated with patients and families. It reminded me why I chose nursing in the first place: to care for people during their most vulnerable moments.

Shadowing in Portugal reinforced my desire to work in healthcare and strengthened my confidence in my future career path.

Beyond the hospital: Travel, culture and everyday life

While the hospital shadowing was a major highlight, studying abroad in Portugal offered so much more than clinical exposure. Outside of the hospital, I was able to explore historic cities, try new foods, and immerse myself in different cultures.

I was able to travel to multiple locations throughout western Europe, which was a chance I may have never gotten otherwise. Living in another country for five weeks taught me independence in ways I never expected.

Navigating public transportation, communicating across language barriers, and adjusting to a new routine helped me grow more confident and resilient. These are skills that translate directly into healthcare, where adaptability and cultural competence are essential.

How study abroad strengthens future nurses

Studying abroad pushed me to slow down and truly reflect on who I am and who I want to become. Being away from home helped me gain a deeper appreciation for my support system while also showing me how capable I am on my own.

I returned from Portugal with a stronger sense of self and a renewed motivation to excel in nursing school. This experience also changed how I view healthcare disparities and access to care.

Seeing another system in action broadened my understanding of global health and reinforced the importance of advocating for patients, no matter where you are. It reminded me that healthcare is not one-size-fits-all and that cultural awareness is key to providing quality care.

Support from KU every step of the way

KU played a huge role in making this experience achievable. From advising and program resources to encouragement from faculty, I felt supported throughout the entire process.

Studying abroad through KU didn’t feel overwhelming, it felt exciting and empowering. All the other students in my program were KU students at all, which helped me feel more at home.

Knowing that my university values global learning and experiential education made me even more proud to be a Jayhawk.

Advice for pre-nursing students considering study abroad

If you are thinking about studying abroad, my biggest piece of advice is to go for it, even if it feels intimidating.

You don’t have to have everything figured out to take the first step. Programs like Atlantis are designed to support students while helping them grow academically and personally.

Studying abroad isn’t just about travel, it’s about gaining perspective, confidence, and clarity. Whether you’re interested in healthcare, business, or another field entirely, there is something incredibly valuable about learning beyond borders.

Why study abroad as a nursing student

My summer in Portugal was truly life-changing. It strengthened my passion for nursing, expanded my worldview, and gave me memories I will cherish forever.

As I now start my journey at KU Nursing and prepare for a career in healthcare, I carry this experience with me as a reminder of how powerful stepping outside your comfort zone can be.

KU’s study abroad program allowed me to explore the world while growing into the nurse and person I aspire to be, and for that, I am incredibly grateful.
