See the World at the International Jayhawk Festival
One afternoon. Dozens of countries. Endless ways to connect.

Choosing the University of Kansas means stepping into a global experience that reaches far beyond the classroom. The International Jayhawk Festival is one of those moments on campus where everything feels a little more colorful, a little more connected and a lot more fun. At KU, international perspectives are part of what makes the campus feel like home.
A Celebration of Cultures, Right on Campus
Each spring, the International Jayhawk Festival brings students together from around the world to share food, music, traditions and stories from their home countries. It’s part cultural celebration, part campus block party and part international buffet.
Booths representing countries like Brazil, India, Ghana, Japan, Vietnam, Turkey, China, Saudi Arabia and Mexico fill the Burge Union with vibrant decorations and nonstop activity. There are cultural music performances on stage, and throughout the room, students teach simple phrases in different languages and help visitors learn about their cultures in immersive games.
And of course, there are snacks. Lots and lots of snacks.
One minute you might be trying a spicy samosa. The next, someone offers you a sweet chocolate treat. You might leave with new study abroad opportunities, new music for your playlists and new friends.
And yes, some people absolutely come just to enjoy the free food. No judgment.
Sharing Stories, One Jayhawk at a Time
KU students are the heart of the International Jayhawk Festival. Their energy and warmth create the welcoming atmosphere that makes the event so memorable. Ruth Tessema is one of many who brings her culture to life through conversation, photos and stories, proudly sharing her East African heritage with everyone who stops by her booth.
“I enjoy seeing all the international students gather in one place completely filling the hall. It is so amazing to hear different accents, dialects and languages spoken in that space,” she says. “There are so many different clubs and organizations that want to share their food, ornaments and games.”

A Celebration that Keeps Growing
Hosted by KU International Support Services, the International Jayhawk Festival highlights the cultures and communities that make KU such a unique and welcoming place. With students from more than 100 countries on campus, there is always something new to learn and someone new to meet.
Events like this are a reminder that KU is not just a beautiful place to study. It’s also a place to connect, to share, to celebrate and to eat your weight in dumplings before heading back to class!
The International Jayhawk Festival continues to grow each year, with new countries, new music and even more delicious food to experience. As Ruth shares, "You will have an afternoon of free fun and free food, and you might learn something new."
