Major-Specific Requirements


To earn direct admission to one of the schools or programs listed below, you may need to meet requirements beyond those for general admission to KU. Note that admission to the schools and programs below is selective.

Freshman Requirements for 2021

Freshmen are assured admission into KU’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, School of Journalism, or School of Social Welfare if they meet one of these combinations:

  • An ACT score of at least 21 or an SAT score of at least 1060 plus a GPA of at least 3.25 OR
  • An ACT score of at least 24 or an SAT score of at least 1160 plus a GPA of at least 3.0 OR
  • A 3.4 GPA on a 4.0 scale, no test scores required or regardless of test score submitted

Freshman Requirements for 2022 and beyond*

Freshmen are assured admission into KU’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences or School of Social Welfare if they meet one of these combinations:

  • A 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale, no test scores required or regardless of test score submitted OR
  • An ACT score of at least 21 or an SAT of at least 1060 plus a 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale

*Pending final approval from the Kansas Board of Regents

 

The requirements listed below are for the summer and fall 2021. These requirements are subject to change for 2022.


Architecture

  • 24+ ACT (1160+ SAT) and 3.2+ cumulative GPA
  • If you have not had the opportunity to take the ACT or SAT in 2020, and are interested in majoring in Architecture, your application will be given a holistic review with or without test scores.
  • Interest Profile completed as a part of the online application to KU or submitted separately online at arcd.ku.edu/architecture-interest-profile.

Priority deadline is Nov. 1. Final deadline for consideration is Feb. 1.

Business

Incoming freshmen applying for 2021 semesters can be directly admitted if they meet the following requirements:

Our current ACT and GPA index score: ACT/10 + GPA ≥ 5.55 OR 3.4+ GPA

Transfer students will need to meet competitive admission requirements:

  • 30 credit hours complete
  • 2.5+ GPA overall and in business coursework
  • ACCT 200, ECON 142, and BSAN 202 complete

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

  • Admission earned by meeting KU’s assured admission standards

Dance

  • Required audition if seeking entry into the B.F.A program

Design

  • 21+ ACT (1060+ SAT) and 3.25+ cumulative GPA or 24+ ACT (1160+ SAT) and 3.0+ cumulative GPA (preferred: 24+ ACT (1160+ SAT) and 3.2+ cumulative GPA)
  • If you have not had the opportunity to take the ACT or SAT, and are interested in majoring in Design, your application will be given a holistic review with or without test scores.
  • Portfolio and essay submitted online at kudesign.slideroom.com/#/Login.

Priority deadline is Nov. 1. Final deadline for consideration is Feb. 1.

Education and Human Sciences

  • Teacher education program: Application submitted in the fall of sophomore year at KU
  • Sport management, community health, health and physical education, and exercise science programs: Application submitted by the end of sophomore year at KU
  • Letters of recommendation and essay for both

Engineering

In light of current challenges to obtaining standardized test scores, an additional pathway to admission has been offered for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 freshmen applicants only: students may be admitted to the School of Engineering if they possess a 3.0+ high school GPA and demonstrate mathematics preparedness by achieving a ‘B’ or better in a college or high school precalculus course, a ‘C’ or better in a high school calculus course, or credit earned via IB or AP credit for the same in accordance with KU placement credit requirements.* These temporary requirements are ONLY available to incoming freshmen and do NOT apply to transfer applicants.
 
Freshman Admission:

  • Must be admissible to the University of Kansas by assured admissions or individual review AND
  • Have a 3.0+ high school GPA AND
  • Have a mathematics ACT score of 22+ (or math SAT score of 540+)

Health Professions

  • Clinical laboratory science: 2.7+ college GPA
  • Health information management: 2.5+ college GPA
  • Respiratory care: 2.5+ college GPA

Students enter these programs after two years of undergraduate study at KU or another institution. In all programs, prerequisite courses in biology, chemistry, and math must be completed with a grade of C or better. All grades (including courses that were repeated) are used in the calculation of the GPA. Additional requirements vary by program.

Interior Architecture

  • 24+ ACT (1160+ SAT) and 3.2+ cumulative GPA
  • If you have not had the opportunity to take the ACT or SAT in 2020, and are interested in majoring in Interior Architecture, your application will be given a holistic review with or without test scores.
  • Interest Profile completed as a part of the online application to KU or submitted separately online at arcd.ku.edu/interior-architecture-design-interest-profile.

Priority deadline is Nov. 1. Final deadline for consideration is Feb. 1.

Journalism

  • Admission earned by meeting KU’s assured admission standards

Music

  • Successful completion of audition on primary instrument or voice

Nursing

  • 2.5+ college GPA
  • Completion of prerequisite courses
  • Nursing application submitted at nursing.kumc.edu

Students enter these programs after two years of undergraduate study at KU or another institution.

Pharmacy

  • 2.5+ college GPA
  • Completion of prerequisite courses
  • Submitted PCAT scores
  • Applicant profile form submitted at pharmacy.ku.edu
  • Three letters of recommendation with accompanying forms sent to rxadmissions@ku.edu

Professional Studies

  • Students enter these programs after approximately two years of undergraduate study at KU or another institution
  • Admission earned by meeting KU’s assured admission standards

Social Welfare

  • Admission earned by meeting KU’s assured admission standards

Visual Art

  • Essay questions completed
  • Portfolio of work submitted
