Planning for cost

Understand the main costs at KU

The total cost of attending KU includes more than tuition alone. As you compare options, review the major categories that can shape your budget, including housing, dining, books, and campus fees.

Tuition

KU’s tuition rate is reviewed each year by university leadership and approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. In some years tuition increases, while in others KU is able to keep rates flat.

KU takes tuition seriously and works to communicate clearly about rate changes and how student dollars are used.

Why this matters: Tuition is typically the starting point for cost planning, but it should be reviewed alongside housing, dining, books, and fees to get a more complete picture.

Housing and dining

Housing

Housing may be the next largest student expense after tuition. KU offers a range of on-campus options so students can choose based on location, amenities, community, or cost.

Many students live in the newest residence halls on Daisy Hill. Others prefer more private apartments, while some apply to KU’s distinctive scholarship halls, which can offer lower-cost living in exchange for shared cooking and chores.

Dining

Dining needs vary from student to student. Through KU Dining Services, students can choose from flexible meal plans that may include residential dining centers and campus retail dining.

Books and fees

Books

Books and course materials can add meaningful cost to a semester. That is why KU Libraries supports access to open educational resources that are free for students and faculty.

Fees

Campus fees help support health and wellness services, recreation facilities, campus unions, transit, child care, sustainability efforts, student media, and other shared resources available to KU students.

Depending on major, students may also pay course fees that support instruction and program-specific academic needs.
