Be advised that new international students do NOT pay the enrollment deposit.
Congratulations on your admission to KU! Soon, it will be time to pack your bags, make the journey to Lawrence, and begin your life as a Jayhawk. We look forward to welcoming you to campus.
There is no better time than now to start making plans. J-1 and F-1 students should start by reviewing the information about obtaining an I-20 form and applying for a student visa. We also encourage you to start working on the Admitted Student Checklist below. And most importantly, meet some of your future classmates on Facebook.
The I-20 or DS-2019 Forms and the Student Visa
After admission, students who will come to KU on F-1 or J-1 visas will receive their I-20 or DS-2019 immigration forms from International Student Services. Take your I-20 or DS-2019 to a United States Embassy and apply for a student visa.
You have two options for receiving your I-20 or DS-2019 form. Review a complete set of instructions.
The Office of International Student Services
The Office of International Student Services is here to help you make plans for your arrival. Read pre-arrival information on the ISS website.
KU Online ID
You will use your KU Online ID to access campus computers, view and change your personal information, enroll in classes, check your e-mail, pay tuition and fees, and more. Create your KU Online ID in advance of your arrival at KU.
Conveniently located and safe, on-campus housing is the place to live, complete with food service, laundry rooms, academic support, and social and recreational activity. To learn more and apply for on-campus housing, visit KU Student Housing.
Living on campus is the best way to get the most out of your university experience. If you do not wish to live on campus, however, there are many off-campus living options in Lawrence.
Plan to travel
You should plan to arrive in the United States no more than 30 days prior to the official report date on your I-20 or DS-2019 form. You will not be permitted to enter the country earlier than 30 days before your report date. You will not be able to enroll in classes if you arrive after your report date.
Health History and Immunization Forms
Before you leave for the United States, you should have a doctor’s examination and complete the immunization history form. Do not submit the form online; bring it with you when you come to KU. Upon your arrival, you will check in with Student Health Services. Their staff will help you complete the immunization history form.
You will also be required to carry health insurance.
“You at KU” Orientation
“YOU at KU” is a week-long program designed to ease your transition to life at KU and in the United States. At “YOU at KU,” you will not only complete the check-ins required for you to enroll, but you will learn about academic programs, student services, advising, and student life. “YOU at KU” is also a great way to make friends with other new students from all around the world. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED, and you must pre-register to reserve your place.
These instructions pertain only to degree seeking, international undergraduates. If you have been admitted to the Applied English Center as a non-degree seeking student, contact firstname.lastname@example.org for shipping instructions.
The Office of International Student Services (ISS) will process your I-20 SEVIS immigration document and mail it to you after you have been admitted to KU. To receive your admission packet, you must choose one of two shipping options:
Option 1: Express Mail
If you choose to receive your packet by express mail, you must make arrangements within 7 days of your admission. We strongly recommend using this option. Express mail, which usually takes 3-4 days, is faster than regular mail.
We use a third party service, eShipGlobal, which allows you to have your packet sent via DHL or FedEx. To get started, visit eShipGlobal and create an account — Do not go through DHL or FedEx directly. You must provide a mailing address, email, phone number, and credit card information. For department, select “Intl. Student & Scholar Services.” If you have any questions while using this service, contact email@example.com.
Option 2: Regular mail
If eShipGlobal does not receive your request within 7 days of your admission, your documents will be shipped via regular mail. International mailings can take up to 2-4 weeks via regular mail. Mailings within the United States can take 3-7 days.
If you choose this option, please reply to our document specialist’s e-mail with the following information, written in your native language and with an English translation:
- Your full name
- Your complete mailing address
- Your phone number
If you have questions about shipping your SEVIS documents, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
